05 / FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
Do I need a referral?
For concussion care: yes. You are required to have a diagnosis letter/referral of a concussion from a doctor before your initial consultation. You do not require a referral if your concussion occurred more than four weeks ago. For headache and migraine care: not always. Some people book directly, while others are referred by their GP or another healthcare professional. If your headache is new, severe, unusual or has not been medically assessed, medical review may be appropriate first.
Can I get a diagnosis of concussion?
No, this is required prior to your initial consultation. This must be obtained via a certified medical practitioner (doctor).
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes, those who have physiotherapy covered with their private health fund will be able to claim.
Do you require a baseline test to be treated for a concussion?
No, the baseline test is useful for individual testing post concussion, however we have protocols to treat those who have not completed a baseline test.
Can I get a return to sport clearance?
You will be taken through the entire rehabilitation process and then, once your clinic is satisfied with your progress, you will be referred to a doctor to complete the final signing of paperwork to return you to sport.
What conditions do Bendigo Concussion Clinic and Ballarat Concussion Clinic assess and manage?
The clinics have a dedicated focus on concussion, headache and migraine. Persistent symptoms following concussion, post-traumatic headache, migraine, cervicogenic headache, dizziness, balance and vestibular problems, visual or eye-movement difficulties, and exercise intolerance are all assessed if indicated. Care can also include planning for return to school, university, work, exercise and sport. Your assessment is individualised, so the areas examined and treated depend on your symptoms, history and goals.
What age groups do you see?
The clinics see adults, adolescents and children aged 12 years and over. Assessment and rehabilitation are adapted to the person's age, symptoms and usual activities, including school, study, work and sport. Younger athletes may also need more conservative return-to-sport planning under current Australian concussion guidance.
Do I need a referral to attend?
For a concussion that has occurred in the previous 4 weeks, yes. The current clinic policy requires a medical practitioner to have diagnosed the concussion and provided a referral before your initial consultation. The clinic does not provide the initial medical diagnosis of concussion. Patients attending solely for headache, migraine can self-refer without a medical referral.
Can I attend if my concussion happened several months or years ago?
Yes. Symptoms that persist after concussion can have several contributing factors, including headache or migraine, neck problems, vestibular or visual difficulties, sleep, exercise intolerance and other health factors. Assessment can help identify which areas remain relevant now and whether rehabilitation, medical review or another referral is appropriate.
Can you work with my GP, neurologist, sports doctor, psychologist, optometrist, school, employer or sporting club?
Concussion and headache care may involve more than one health professional, and the clinic can incorporate recommendations from other members of your healthcare team into your rehabilitation. Return-to-school, work and sport needs can also be considered during treatment.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
No, we do not currently offer telehealth appointments.
Do you assess both headache and migraine?
Yes. The clinic's headache service can assess people with migraine, headaches following concussion and headaches in which cervical, vestibular, visual or exercise-related factors may be relevant. The aim is not to assume one cause for every headache. Your history and examination are used to identify findings that may be suitable for physiotherapy and situations where medical investigation or co-management is more appropriate.
Can neck dysfunction contribute to headache or migraine symptoms?
Neck dysfunction can contribute to some headaches, and cervicogenic headache is a recognised secondary headache disorder. Neck pain is also common during migraine and does not automatically mean the neck is causing the migraine. Assessment therefore looks for evidence that cervical movement or function is meaningfully related to the person's familiar headache rather than assuming a causal link simply because the neck feels sore.
Can I claim through private health insurance, and can the claim be processed through HICAPS?
The current clinic websites state that patients whose private health insurance includes physiotherapy can claim eligible consultations. Your rebate will depend on your individual insurer and level of cover, so the clinic cannot guarantee the amount.
Do you accept WorkSafe Victoria or TAC funded patients?
We do accept third party funded patients. These patients are required to pay an upfront fee during the consultation and will then be reimbursed via their third party funding externally from the clinic.
